Our 16th project with developer Alliance Leisure, this £2.5million contract saw us deliver a new 5,100sq ft extension and refurbishments to the existing building at Northallerton Leisure Centre.

Run by Hambleton District Council, the first month of operation saw a 45% increase in gym users, a 30% increase in group fitness attendance and 2,000 more swimmers across January and February 2018. Thanks to the improvements, the centre is celebrating its highest ever membership levels with 1,608 users.

The feedback from members has been glowing, with one user commenting: “The whole development is brilliant, particularly the gym”.

Northallerton Leisure Centre - ISG
ISG has been an excellent partner throughout this project. Since their involvement at pre-construction stage, they have been exceptionally professional, resourceful and tolerant of our requirements, even when we needed to change details late on in the programme. We worked to an extremely tight programme, in a ‘live’ leisure centre environment, with elements of the service remaining open throughout the build. This added to the complexities and risks of the project but all of this was managed well, with a very clear and unambiguous focus on health and safety.

The project

ISG was appointed by Alliance Leisure to deliver the project in summer 2018, with works being carried out in a live environment. We took a phased approach, minimising disruption to users and ensuring that the centre could maintain operations throughout the works.

The centre now boasts a 24-hour gym and toning area in the extension. New multi-use and spin studios, changing facilities, energy-efficient lighting and a refurbished timber-sprung floor in the sports hall have transformed the existing building, while the pool hall has been refurbished to create a bright and much refreshed space, with repairs and upgrades carried out to the water slide and wave machines.

ISG has had a framework agreement with Alliance Leisure since 2010, built around Sport England’s desire to engage the wider community in fitness initiatives, while adding value with innovative new provisions, such as spas, soft play, climbing walls, Tag Active, zip lines and immersive spin studios.

Ultimately the project was delivered on time, on budget and to a standard of quality and finish that we, and more importantly, our customers and other stakeholders are delighted with. ISG have been excellent throughout and a company that we would readily endorse. We would happily work with them on future projects.

We were committed to reducing disruption to leisure centre users. Our teams phased the works to ensure the new gym opened as the former space closed for refurbishment, and a temporary car park was created to maintain parking provision for the centre throughout the works.

Night time working and a redesign of the slab structure reduced the overall project duration, with additional works to address latent issues located throughout the project incorporated as part of the programme.

The end user [Hambleton District Council] is delighted with the project outcomes. The project was delivered efficiently by ISG on budget and matching our high expectations. The dedicated account management team that ISG has assigned to the Alliance Leisure relationship really supports this; they understand our needs and work with us to achieve the best outcome for our clients, and we look forward to continuing this positive relationship on current and future projects.

The works drastically improved the energy efficiency of the building.

Throughout the construction we also aimed to reduce our environmental impact, by using eco cabins and recycled materials, diverting 95% of construction waste from landfill.

We engaged local businesses and employed local operatives where possible.
