Introduction

We extended The University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) to provide capacity for an expanded Composite Centre.

The client requested changes during the project, requiring us to adapt the schedule in order to deliver the additional works within the limited time period.

The existing facility remained in use while the works were carried out, meaning we had to put strategies in place to reduce disruption to staff.

AMRC

The project

We built an extension to The University of Sheffield’s existing Factory of the Future building. The single-storey steel frame building features a general workshop as well as a controlled environment with a high-specification clean room, accessed via air locks.

The new structure incorporates an internal gantry crane to provide a heavy lift capability. We also extended the district heating main to serve the new facility.

A number of site visits for local school pupils and staff were organised, and spare building materials, including timber and plywood, were donated to the Design Technology department.

Sustainability

The new extension achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. A major contributing factor to this was the service connections were made to local sustainable infrastructure, including wind turbines and ground source heat pumps. 100% of all site waste was recycled. We reached our target of sourcing 20% of the total value of materials from recycled and reused content.
