Building skills

No two universities have the same set of challenges. At ISG, we have equipped ourselves with a broad range of experts and skills to ensure we craft the right responses to your needs, no matter how complex. From construction and fit out to refurbishment and technology services, we provide end-to-end solutions, bring the right people to the table, and align ourselves around your vision. Furthermore, our development team unlocks new options for student accommodation, and our dedicated design and build service offers strategic portfolio solutions for university estates.

As universities look for ways to operate more efficiently, forge private partnerships, and attract the best students and funding, often the answers lie outside higher education. ISG’s culture of sharing knowledge and focusing on clients ensures our higher education customers benefit from our extensive expertise in other sectors, from workplace and residential to health and technology.

Responsible construction for the community

Drawing on local resource in Wales: We understand how higher education facilities need to attract the world’s best talent. But we also know how having revolutionary research on your doorstep greatly benefits local economies and communities. Cardiff Business School in Wales was ISG’s first project with the University of Cardiff, and its signature design was selected to promote Welsh innovation and research. Over half of all labour and materials were sourced from within Wales. The building stands as a proud, local landmark with a truly international outlook.

Proactive teams ready to react

Switching it up in Sheffield: When creating thriving, collaborative spaces for world-leading research, we understand how reactions to market changes can influence design. We also know how to adapt our models to deliver an exceptional job without impacting on your schedule or your stakeholders. The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre partners with industry giants to carry out research into advanced machining, manufacturing and materials. During our extension scheme, additional works were carried out with the existing facility remaining in occupation. We adapted our schedule to deliver on time and to a highly sustainable specification, with 100% of all site waste recycled.

Blending business and learning

Thinking beyond the classroom at UWE Bristol: The striking new home for the Bristol Business School at the University of the West of England in Bristol is a landmark development at the heart of the institution’s multimillion pound masterplan. We understand how the demands being placed on universities are changing. As well as providing exemplary facilities for its students, the new seven-storey, 185,000 sq ft building will also provide space for professional organisations.SMEs, accountants and start-ups will mix with students and staff in a fully collaborative, open, and innovative space of learning and development. The resulting environment will attract the best students looking for opportunities, and strengthen ties with the local business community. In 2016, this project picked up two Constructing Excellence South West Built Environment Awards in the categories of BIM Project of the Year and Image of Construction.

Industry recognised award-winning design

Breaking ground in Hertfordshire

We are a company with a track record in delivering truly dynamic and unique construction projects in the higher education sector. The building for the School of Law, Criminology and Political Science at the University of Hertfordshire was a first for many reasons: not only was it the UK’s first fully functioning court room designed purely for training purposes, but its reconstituted curved stone and glass façade was also the first of its kind in the UK. There was only one supplier in Europe that could provide glass of the size and curvature required. The project went on to win numerous design and innovation awards, including Most Sustainable Construction at the Building Futures awards.

Providing stylish student accomodation

Exceeding expectations

Chapter Spitalfields, formerly known as Nido Spitalfields, provides accommodation for 1,200 students over 35 storeys in a bustling district of London. On completion, it was one of the tallest student accommodation buildings in the world, including leisure facilities, retail, office and residential apartments. Our construction team worked closely with property developers to deliver this multi-use building. Similarly, our work in Cardiff with the boutique developer, Fusion Students, involved providing a new seven-storey structure complete with self-contained studios and 'twodios';. Residents share an impressive range of communal amenities including a cinema, private student lounge, games room and gym. We have a designated global development team which is busy exploring opportunities across the UK and beyond to further our reach in delivering exemplary student accommodation.
