Introduction

The London Borough of Southwark needed to relocate over 2,000 staff from a myriad of locations doted around the borough. In uniting their staff under one roof they achieved financial efficiency, operational effectiveness, improved staff well being, and created a sustainable flagship for the Borough of Southwark.

The Project

The design was developed in full consultation with council staff and affords the most effective use of space, facilitating communication between teams, with 1,750 open plan workstations supporting 2,000 staff in an 8:10 sharing ratio. The six floors of accommodation offer a variety of spaces that support flexible working. Each floor has at least two main meeting spaces as well as a range of informal break out areas.

The Added Value

Architectural design and technical services capability transferred any required changes into deliverable plans which resulted in the project being concluded on budget and ahead of schedule. The most considerable example was a saving of circa £100,000, which resulted from the simplification of the original design of a folding display wall system.

On completion, ISG assisted Southwark Council with a range of communication strategies including producing a DVD featuring interviews which can be seen here. ISG also assisted in the production of an event at the office highlighting the project’s sustainability.
