This project required remedial works to high level stone work on the A and B wings, gatehouse and workshops and was our third project at the prison, which is a Grade II* listed building. This followed a major re-roof project and a scheme to upgrade the alarms and shower facilities. The works were undertaken in a live prison environment.
The main requirement was to re-fix down loose coping stones along with some remedial pointing and additional roof works. ISG re-fixed down the stones with stainless steel ties which were anchored in with a cementitious material and then clamped together. There were associated scaffolding works to access the work areas.
The repointing work required the removal of the existing cementitious material to be replaced with a new lime mortar. The additional roof works involved slate repairs plus the full strip and renewal of the slate in certain areas. There was also some lead work, again involving either repair or complete replacement as required.
This project followed two previous schemes at HMP Leeds, bringing our total time at the prison to nearly three years. This has enabled strong relationships to be built up with the prison management team leading to collaborative working and efficiencies through shared site overheads and the avoidance of re-establishment costs.
ISG completed the project a week ahead of schedule, achieved by Lean project management, planning and programme techniques. Effective relationships with the prison management and design teams also helped in achieving this.
Working on a listed building, ISG had to factor in the planning and conservation application process to gain approval for the works. It was imperative that the materials and processes used during the project were sympathetic to the listed building.
“ISG’s in-depth understanding of the client and stakeholder requirements allowed them to deliver a project which improved the working and living environment for the staff and prisoners. The project was completed early, on budget and with no defects, their approach was at all times professional and they made great efforts to forge strong relationships with all stakeholders.”
