ISG built a multi-purpose state-of-the-art auditorium at Saffron Walden County High School and extended the existing sixth form accommodation.
The high-specification facility, which is used by both the school and as a community performance venue accommodates up to 842 people (audience and performers) across raked seating and balcony areas. The highly flexible design of the auditorium features a large retractable seating area and a sunken orchestra pit that can be covered over to increase the overall floor space. The two-storey steel frame structure also features impressive backstage facilities with changing rooms, rehearsal space and multi-use teaching and tutorial rooms.
ISG also extended the existing sixth form accommodation at the school, and remodelled and rationalised space to enhance private study and social facilities for older students.
Externally, ISG significantly increased parking provision and improved vehicle access routes across the site.
As the school was occupied, it was necessary to liaise closely with the customer to ensure works were phased appropriately to fit with school activities, examination periods and holidays.
The remodelling of the sixth form and the entrance were undertaken during the summer holiday period. The auditorium features roof-mounted photovoltaic cells and the project achieved a 'Very Good' BREEAM environmental rating.
