We recently launched our new health and safety programme, ‘Choose safe. Choose health’, which aims to harness the collective power of everyday choices, reminding our employees of how their choices affect not only the safety of individuals, but also their physical and mental health.
Following the launch campaign, ISG in Hong Kong held an annual health and safety charter workshop at Montery Plaza, Kwun Tong, promoting the latest industry-leading health and safety practices across the workplace and construction sites.
Managing director for ISG in North Asia, Tim Threlkeld, delivered his opening speech: “We have been highly conscious of occupational health and safety throughout the years, with a specific target of achieving zero accidents on construction sites.
“The new ‘Choose safe. Choose health’ programme takes us to the next level, and makes us a pioneer which cares about health and safety beyond construction sites and office environments, including the physical and mental health of our people.”
Echoing a renewed focus on the well-being of our people, a counselling director from Quality HealthCare was invited to deliver an inspiring talk about positive mental wellness to the 60+ people who attended the workshop. He shared tips around positive thinking and maintaining happiness, followed by a live demonstration of a stress relief exercise.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for ISG to review achievements and areas for improvements in terms of health and safety. HSQE manager, Tony Kwok, reported: “We have been doing well in maintaining high standards of safety requirements across our sites. We currently stand at a zero fatal and serious accident rate, and zero safety prosecution, suspension and improvement notices issued by government departments in the past year.”
The safety standards of our project and health and safety teams were highly commended by our customers, stakeholders and government departments. Nine #TeamISG people were also awarded ‘ISG Supervisor – Best Safety Performance’ awards in recognition of their fantastic efforts in upholding high safety standards on sites.
A mini exhibition and demonstration of safe and unsafe equipment was another highlight of the event. Led by project directors, the demonstration provided examples of unqualified or broken equipment to highlight unsafe circumstances and prevent safety hazards on site.
A demonstration on how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) in the event of emergency also took place, along with a group exercise, ‘Ba Duan Jin Qigong’, which is a form of local qigong exercise, known to improve cardiovascular function.
Through the workshop, employees were provided an overview of our safety performance and practices that affect their everyday choices. Our renewed people-focused approach, which includes caring for people’s physical and mental wellness, helps further differentiate us as an employer and service provider in the construction industry.
