There is no normal route into a construction career; just ask Dylan Bent in our UK Construction Yorkshire team.
The 24-year-old has double the reason to celebrate his journey into the world of work, having been sponsored through his degree by ISG and promoted to assistant quantity surveyor in the same year.
At 16, Dylan left school with the dream of becoming a project manager, having been inspired by his dad who works in the industry.
He went on to complete a BTEC in Construction at the Leeds College of Building.
In his second year, he took more of an interest in quantity surveying and decided to apply to university.
Dylan says: “After accepting a place at Leeds Beckett University, I wondered whether I might be better off applying to a company to sponsor me through the rest of my degree.”
Dylan accepted a job offer from ISG in July 2011 and has gone from strength to strength.
He completed his degree on a part-time day release at the same time as receiving on the job training.
He graduated from Leeds Beckett University in 2016 and was promoted from trainee quantity surveyor to assistant quantity surveyor at the end of 2016.
He is currently working on with our public sector frameworks team in Yorkshire.
He added: “I would highly recommend the route I took to becoming a quantity surveyor.
“I gained invaluable knowledge whilst working full time in the construction industry at the same time as studying. It brought what I was learning to life.
“The scheme I am working on at the moment is nearing completion and I am looking forward to my next challenge.”
ISG was recently shortlisted for Graduate Scheme of the Year at the 2017 Construction Investing in Talent Awards (CITA) for its work in this area.
Jane Falconer, group HR director, said: “We’re committed to helping our graduates grow their skills, ambition and capabilities into fantastic careers.
“We’re delighted to be shortlisted by the CITA.
“The recognition is testament to the massive step-change in our offering and the overall success of our programme.”
Winners of CITA will be announced at a special event at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on 15 November 2017.
