ISG understands that different people take different routes to reach their end goal. So, if going to university isn’t for you, we can still help you to achieve your dream of working within construction, and delivering projects that inspire generations. Our apprentices learn from industry experts and gain hands on experience to help them fast track a career within the industry.
Our values are at the very heart of all we do, meaning we encourage our apprentices to dream smart, speak frankly, always care and never stop learning. As a result, we have a programme which encourages our employees to continuously develop and grow, think big about their career aspirations, ask questions and strive to achieve the best for themselves, for ISG and, most importantly, for our customers.
Our five-year programme will see you learn all about the ISG business, while working towards your professional chartership. This is underpinned by your degree, which you will complete through our trusted provider. Your degree will be delivered virtually, with online classes, learning and assessments, as well as a dedicated tutor and apprenticeship coordinator to help you with any questions you may have. To help you to succeed in your degree, you will be given one day within the working week where you can either work from home or your local office on the degree element.
Your first year with ISG will be in your specialism, either quantity surveying or construction management. You will be working on site, shadowing and learning from industry leaders about how a manager in your specialism contributes to and maintains a project. In years two and three, you will rotate across our core areas (quantity surveying, construction management, winning work, and technical/building services), as well as an option to complete rotations in other areas such as sustainability, health and safety, and design management. During these rotations, you will get hands on experience on live projects, work alongside industry leading experts and with high profile customers to deliver impactful and lasting projects with long-term, collaborative relationships.
In years three, four and five you will join our graduates on their technical workshops and taught syllabus, helping you to further grow and develop the skills and knowledge to further your career within ISG. All of this is supported by a development record and dedicated supervisor to help consolidate your understanding and provide you with mentorship and career coaching throughout your programme.
As a Construction site manager at ISG, you will work closely with the site project team to ensure all site works are planned and completed in line with the programme for the project. You will be responsible for ensuring that all work is delivered to the highest quality, maintaining excellent client satisfaction levels and upholding health and safety standards on site. A key part of this role is liaising with a wide number of stakeholders and contractors, ensuring that works are completed safely and to plan. When projects face delays, you will be required to work with the client to keep them informed and offer an alternative solution.
This role would be ideal for those who are highly organised and like working to deadlines. You will have excellent communication skills, able to tailor communications to different stakeholders as appropriate, and have a passion for supporting the management of large projects. The ability to influence decisions and solve any issues quickly and calmly is also an advantage.
As a quantity surveyor at ISG, you will work closely with the quantity surveyors on site to help manage and track the commercial aspects of the project. A key part of this role is to utilise your relationship and influencing skills to negotiate and consider the financial implications of the project, for both ISG and our customer. Each day will be different. You’ll be negotiating costs on the project with sub-contractors, through to producing value reports and supporting any client changes to the project, while ensuring our delivery is on time and profitable. This role would be ideal for those who have a passion and interest for numbers and problem solving. You will be analytically minded and able to influence without authority to ensure the best outcome is reached for the customer and ISG. Being a good team player and able to build effective relationships quickly is also an advantage.
At ISG, we are committed to recruiting the best talent in the industry and encouraging young people to explore a career in construction. We’ve supported apprenticeships throughout the business for years and some of our best people started out as young apprentices. We asked three of our brightest former and current construction apprentices for their opinions on their industry training. Their responses highlighted the importance of apprenticeships to our industry. You can find out more below.
