Professional Construction Practice Level 3 Diploma

At ISG our vision is to become the world’s most dynamic construction services company, delivering places that help people and businesses thrive. Our 2,800 worldwide specialists in fit out, technology, construction and developments deliver not just buildings, but unbeatable customer experience fuelled by a fast-paced, ideas-driven culture. This can only be sustainable if ISG has access to the right people with the right skills.

We have recognised that 'Professional Construction Practice' isn’t often the first subject that learners choose to study post-16. To tackle the skills gap that currently exists in the professional construction, ISG has joined forces with WJEC to co-develop a new qualification, the Professional Construction Practice (PCP) Level 3 Diploma.

Why the PCP?

The PCP course offers young people the chance to become familiar with this great industry, introducing the standards, skills, techniques, technologies and ethos of the profession.

The course showcases the new and emerging technologies in contemporary construction practice, and is designed to provide learners with a comprehensive framework of knowledge, understanding and the promotion of applied skills, which the industry now relies on. We hope that the PCP will attract the brightest and best students looking to enter aspirational careers in the world of property development, architecture, engineering, surveying and construction. We also believe that the PCP could be the pipeline through which the industry starts to address the gender imbalance in our workforce; statistics show that less than 7% of students on construction courses in FE in 2015/16 were female. Recognised by Universities and UCAS for progression into Higher Education and valued by employers as a foundation for Higher Level Apprenticeships, we believe the PCP will create a talent pool of young people capable of taking on the vast opportunities that exist in the UK, European and Global Construction Industry.

ISG working in partnership
ISG will be inviting a number of colleges across the UK to join the ‘ISG Construction Learning Alliance’. As well as being part of a small network of centres working together to share knowledge and good practice, centres in the Alliance will be supported by ISG to engage young people to take-up the PCP and to upskill their staff to deliver the programme. Successful centres will go on to become ISG Centres of Excellence (CoE) and will continue to receive a broad and comprehensive support package.

Our regional office teams will also establish relationships with CoEs to bring up to the minute experience from live projects - in property development, architecture, engineering surveying and construction - to college-based learning environments. Teachers in CoEs will have a single point of contact in their ISG regional office to request materials such as images, further case studies, and any additional project support they require.

Our well-connected professionals can help arrange specialist visits from industry bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and supply chain partners.

“The CIOB is delighted to support the new Diploma in Professional Construction Practice. This qualification will help attract much needed new talent into the industry, which is currently experiencing skills gaps.”

Rosalind Thorpe, head of education at the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

“The diploma is a step forward in preparing students for university with a solid grounding in professional practice for design, engineering, construction and commercial managers. It is great that we have been able to utilise support from ISG, as a major contractor as we can be sure that the knowledge that is being passed onto the next generation of construction professionals is up to date, relevant and used daily on some of our country’s most impressive construction sites.”

Allan Perry, subject officer at WJEC
