Our work in healthcare

Schoen Clinic

We used our industry-leading expertise in healthcare, as well as offices, retail and hotels, to deliver a five-star private medical facility on London's famous Harley Street.
Find out more

ISG has successfully completed the £25m fit-out of a private medical provider’s first facility outside of Germany. Schoen Clinic, the largest family-owned hospital group in Germany, has 23 facilities specialising in orthopaedics, neurology, and mental health.

The 79,000 sq ft project involved the fit out of an existing commercial space building, which was stripped back to its shell and core, to create a new seven-storey, ‘five-star’ private medical facility on Wigmore Street, London’s Harley Street medical area.

39 customised en-suite inpatient rooms within the top three floors of the building give the clinic a professional, yet comfortable, look and feel of hotel rooms. The first floor offers consultation and treatment rooms, a physio suite, office space, lounge areas as well as a new, larger new bed lift.

The ground floor is home to extra consultation rooms, a main reception area and the patient waiting area, while the lower ground floor houses a state-of-the-art imaging suite that is fully equipped with an MRI, CT scanner and X-ray machine.

Three state-of-the-art operating theatres and first stage recovery rooms also occupy the basement level.

The orthopaedic hospital is already operating beyond the client’s initial activity expectations. The clinic will now continue to recruit new staff and ramp up operationally.

St Thomas' Hospital

Working with one of the UK’s leading clinical PET/CT centres, Guy’s and St Thomas, we transformed CT scanning provisions at St Thomas’ Hospital
Find out more

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital is one of the UK’s leading clinical PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography coupled with Computerised Tomography) centres. The Trust has exciting and ambitious plans to develop buildings and services, and to keep investing in state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

This project was part of a wider programme to completely replace the CT scanning provision for St Thomas’ Hospital. This phase was for the provision of three scanning rooms, two of which are PET/CT scanners and one is an MRI/CT scanner.

The work consisted of all scanning provision rooms and associated areas including the reception, consulting and treatment rooms, write-up areas, ‘hot labs’ and ‘hot waiting areas’. This included the conversion of the existing areas and all new systems had to be cut into the existing services.

Towards the end of the project ISG spent a month working alongside GE, the scanner supplier, to help them integrate the equipment into the base build. We then did tandem commissioning before the unit went live.

Spire St Anthony's Hospital

We extended existing hospital facilities to house six new operating theatres and a hybrid theatre with the latest surgical equipment and technologies.
Find out more

St Anthony’s Hospital in Cheam, Surrey is a private hospital with a unique history. Purchased in 1904 by the Daughters of the Cross, a Roman Catholic religious order, it was established before the NHS was created, and had an innovative approach to patient care. When the hospital was set up, the nuns let patients pay whatever they could afford for their treatment.

The hospital was bought by Spire Healthcare in 2014, who have retained St Anthony’s ethos of dedication to provide the best patient care and maintain strong relationships with the local community.

The project saw the team extend the existing hospital building with a new build theatre block, housing six theatres at first floor, an energy centre and treatment accommodation at ground floor. It will help increase the capacity for procedures, enabling the hospital to treat patients more quickly.

The extension accommodates six brand new operating theatres, including a hybrid theatre, and the latest surgical equipment and technologies, such as robotic operating machines.

The hybrid theatre enables the room to adapt to a number of surgical procedures - using new surgical techniques - and provide the best patient care. The extension sits on pile foundations, upon which concrete ring beams support the new concrete frame.

As the extension took place alongside an occupied hospital, designing a build programme and logistical plans that had minimal impact on patients, staff and daily operations was paramount.

The project was the first in the UK to utilise new clean air hood technology within the operating theatres.

Optegra Eye Hospital

Our experts converted a centrally-located six storey town house into a one-stop-shop for ophthalmology.
Find out more

We created a state-of-the-art eye hospital in London’s renowned Marylebone medical district for high-end ophthalmic specialist Optegra.

Retaining the attractive Edwardian and Victorian façades of the two buildings and unifying space and levels across both buildings.

The scheme involved the conversion of two six story period properties into an advanced facility for the treatment of a comprehensive range of eye conditions. We installed facilities including operating theatre suites and a dedicated refractive laser unit for eye surgery.

We also created a high-specification reception area and a series of consulting rooms on the ground floor. At second floor level we delivered two high-tech operation theatres, complete with ceiling mounted precision microscopes. The third floor houses a patient recovery suite, with staff offices and welfare facilities on the building’s upper levels.

One Mabledon Place, HSL

ISG has transformed One Mabledon Place, a 1960s-high-rise office building in central London, into Europe’s largest state-of-the-art pathology and diagnostics facility.
Find out more

We have transformed One Mabledon Place, a high-rise building in central London, into a core pathology unit for HSL. The flagship facility is set to deliver the highest standards of clinical pathology services.

Through its partnership with University College London, it will be used as a place for academic innovation, clinical training and research.

As the facility is technically demanding, structural steelwork played a major part in construction. The building is able to to house heavy medical and research equipment, including chillers and diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply devices.

Our team of experts delivered the design and construction of office accommodation and core laboratory space, introducing industry-leading technologies in the facility such as CL3 laboratories and a cutting-edge tracking and distribution system.

Pioneering the highest clinical stands and raising the profile of pathology in patient care, the UK flagship facility blends the best pathology and design expertise into a world-leading centre of technology and architectural excellence.

Addenbrookes Hospital

We delivered two new operating theatres for long-term client, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, to improve the lives of people suffering with vascular disease.
Find out more

ISG delivered a state-of-the art Hybrid Endovascular Aneurism Repair (EVAR) operating theatres and associated preparatory rooms at this world-renowned teaching hospital. The new EVAR theatres will improve the lives of people suffering with vascular disease.

We completed this project for long-term customer Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, having previously worked on numerous projects for this hospital.

Works carried out in occupied areas were fast-tracked and resulted in the areas being closed to the public for just one week. We worked closely with the Trust throughout the project to minimise disruption. We ensured that all noisy works were undertaken outside of normal site working hours. To maintain the programme, the project was managed on a 24 hours-a-day, triple-shift basis.

15 Portland Place

Uniting two leading names in healthcare and research, we converted an eight-storey office building into one of the world's most advanced imaging facilities.
Find out more

London's Howard De Walden Estate is a thriving medical district that is home to some of the world's leading private healthcare providers and clinics.

At its heart is Portland Place – a unique collaboration between the renowned US hospital group, Mayo Clinic, and the Oxford University Clinic; itself a joint venture between University of Oxford and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Following in the footsteps of Schoen Clinic and Optegra Eye Hospital, and just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of London’s Oxford Circus, ISG’s specialist Engineering Services team is transforming an eight-storey office building into one of the world's most advanced imaging facilities.

Bringing together new thinking and practices, the new medical facility will help foster innovation and drive advances in medical research and patient care, housing an MRI scanner, CT and X-ray machines, as well as monography and endoscopy equipment.

The clinic will provide leading-edge screening and diagnostics outside the NHS before it opens in early 2019. Financial surpluses generated from these activities will be used to help advance clinical education and NHS patient care, and to fund vital medical research.

Spire Centennial Park

Our second project with Spire Healthcare saw us repurpose an underused warehouse into a state-of-the-art purpose-built medical diagnostic centre.
Find out more

Our Science and Health team has transformed a previously underused warehouse into a state-of-the-art purpose-built medical diagnostic centre for repeat client Spire healthcare.

The Spire Bushey Diagnostic Centre, Spire’s largest facility in the south-east, plays an important role in the private healthcare provider’s redevelopment strategy at Bushey. The centre will allow easier access and convenient travel for patients outside the busy town centre and will alleviate the impact on resources at the main hospital.

ISG’s role involved converting existing consulting rooms into bedrooms for in-patients, to allow important refurbishment works take place at the main hospital.

Built with the latest imaging technologies, including a new high-specification MRI scanner and X-Ray machine, the facilities are home to some of the most technologically advanced services that have helped revolutionise the diagnosis of critical illnesses and injuries.

The new centre was built with a new mezzanine deck steel structure that ran through the existing warehouse to extend the height of the facility by an additional level. The front façade was also adapted to incorporate a two-storey passenger lift.

The architectural finishes involved in a private healthcare facility of this type were of the highest standard, designed with the wellbeing of patients and staff in mind.

Spire Healthcare is a leading provider of private healthcare, with 36 private hospitals throughout the UK. The company is built on a proud heritage of over 25 years’ experience of running successful private hospitals.
