American School London

ISG has been awarded a new build project for the American School in London which was established in 1951. It has been located at its existing site at Waverley Campus in St Johns Wood since 1971.

About this project

ISG has been awarded a complex new build and refurbishment project for the American School in London.

Having undergone numerous enhancements over the past 40 years, we are currently constructing a four-storey art block which is targeting a ‘BREEAM Very Good’ rating, a subterranean swimming pool and fitness suite, and a new playground for the school.

The art building comprises neo-classical style limestone frontal elevation. The rear façade will feature curtain walling to enhance the volume of natural daylight within the structure and brise soleil to minimise solar gain, with a green sedum roof contributing to the design’s BREEAM ‘Very Good’ performance rating.

At ground floor the building comprises a design studio with dedicated staff work rooms and stores with a permanent exhibition and display gallery with natural light provided by a linear roof light and glazing to the adjoining courtyard. The pool and fitness building comprise of a six lane swimming pool, dance studio, fitness suite, student changing facilities, ancillary storage, office, plant and circulation space.

The existing playground will be reinstated above incorporating a new landscape strategy and improved boundary treatments. The new playground will sit approximately 900mm higher than the existing level.

Additional work within the project includes the creation of a new entrance hall in the main school building and the addition of curtain walling to its southern façade, along with recladding the existing external staircases with timber and stone finishes.
